The patron of poem 37 was Dafydd Llwyd of Newtown. He was praised by a number of poets, including Lewys Glyn Cothi (GLGC poems 201, 202) and Gwilym ab Ieuan Hen (GDID poems IX, X, XVIII; see also Daniel 1997).

His career
Dafydd was a man of renown in the cantref of Cedewain in the mid-fifteenth century and an important and generous patron of poets. We know that he was at one time a tax collector in Newtown for Richard, duke of York, and his family were ardent supporters of the Yorkists. He died between 1465 and 1469. His son, Rhys, was councillor of Montgomery castle and an esquire and steward to Edward IV in Cedewain, Ceri, Cyfeiliog and Arwystli (DWB 101–2). Rhys, who died in the battle of Banbury in 1469, was also a patron of the poets (cf. GLGC poem 203; GDLl poem 55).
